International Circulation: You have mentioned a team approach to patient management. Can you expand on this team approach in dealing with patients? Dr Smith: I think that the team approach is really important in taking care of patients with heart disease - doctors and cardiologists working with endocrinologists, internists and surgeons and even working with nurses. We have a study here, the BRIG program, a research study chaired by Professor Zhao Dong at Anzhen Hospital looking at how nurses can be brought more into the team. We have seen in our practice at the University of North Carolina that a team that involves not only doctors but nurses and everyone working together (and here at this meeting we see sports medicine coming in), it is this community working together to prevent heart disease and stroke that is actually going to get the epidemic under control.
